The Story Behind Laumei: A Memory I Carry
Share
Some designs begin with an idea.
This one began with a memory.
Growing up in American Samoa, my grandmother, Foloolela Tuitele Faletufuga Fuifui, was an important part of my life.
One of the memories I still carry is hearing Grandma sing O Le Tala I Le Laumei Ma Le Malie — the Legend of the Turtle and the Shark, from Vaitogi.
I also remember seeing sea turtles swimming through the ocean on television between programs in Samoa.
I didn't know it then, but those simple childhood memories would stay with me.
Years later, when I began creating MoanaSina, I wanted the Laumei to become part of what this brand represents.
My brother, Sulu'ape Steve Looney, owner of Pacific Soul Tattoo, and I collaborated to bring that vision to life.
He created the Polynesian design work of the Laumei, drawing from artistic traditions across Polynesia, while I brought the memories and meaning behind why the Laumei was so important to me.
Together, we created something that represents more than a turtle.
For me, Laumei represents longevity, culture, heritage, and family.
It reminds me of Grandma.
Of growing up in Samoa.
Of my life in Hawaiʻi.
And of the people and places that helped shape who I am.
Today, I get to place that story onto something you can actually carry.
This is Laumei.
And this is one of the stories I carry.
Welcome to MoanaSina Creations.
Every design has a story.
